Tire Pressure Light: Causes, Fixes and TPMS Reset

    The first cold morning of the year, thousands of tire pressure lights come on at once. Most of those drivers add air, the light goes out, and nothing more is thought about it. But the TPMS warning has more than one meaning, and the difference between a solid light and a flashing one determines whether you need a compressor or a scan tool.

    This guide covers what triggers the light, how to inflate to the correct pressure, and how to get the system to clear once you have.

    Solid vs flashing: two different problems

    Watch the light for the first minute after you start the car.

    • Solid light — at least one tire is significantly underinflated. In most markets the system is required to warn you once a tire falls roughly 25 percent below the recommended pressure, which is already low enough to affect handling and fuel economy. Add air.
    • Flashing for about 60 to 90 seconds on start-up, then going solid — this is a system malfunction, not a pressure warning. Something is wrong with the TPMS itself: a dead sensor battery, a sensor damaged during a tire change, or a wheel fitted without a working sensor. Adding air will not clear this one.

    That flashing sequence is the single most misread signal in the whole system. If you have been chasing pressures for weeks and the light keeps coming back, check whether it flashes at start-up first.

    Why cold weather sets it off

    Air contracts as it cools. As a rule of thumb, tire pressure drops about 1 psi for every 10°F (roughly 5.5°C) drop in ambient temperature.

    So a tire sitting comfortably at 33 psi on a mild autumn afternoon can read 28 psi on a freezing morning without having lost a molecule of air. Add an overnight temperature swing to a tire that was already a little soft, and it crosses the warning threshold.

    This is also why the light often goes out on its own after twenty minutes of driving. The tires warm up, pressure rises back above the threshold, and the system stops complaining. That is not a fix; the tire is still low when cold, which is the condition that matters.

    Direct vs indirect TPMS

    Two different systems wear the same warning symbol:

    • Direct TPMS uses a battery-powered pressure sensor inside each wheel, usually built into the valve stem, broadcasting to a receiver. It reports actual pressure and can often display per-tire values. Sensor batteries are sealed and last roughly five to ten years, after which the whole sensor is replaced.
    • Indirect TPMS has no sensors at all. It uses the ABS wheel speed sensors to infer pressure: an underinflated tire has a slightly smaller rolling radius, so it turns marginally faster than its neighbours. It is cheaper and maintenance-free, but it cannot tell you which tire or by how much, and it must be recalibrated after every inflation.     Tools and materials you’ll need

    • A quality tire pressure gauge — a dial or digital one is worth having; the pencil-style gauges vary a lot
    • An air compressor, or access to one at a service station
    • A valve core tool (inexpensive, and it solves the leaking-valve case)
    • A spray bottle with soapy water for leak detection
    • A scan tool with TPMS functions, only if you are dealing with a system fault rather than low pressure

    Step-by-step: clearing a tire pressure light

    1. Find the correct pressure. It is on a placard in the driver’s door jamb, and sometimes inside the fuel filler flap or glovebox. Do not use the number moulded into the tire sidewall. That is the maximum pressure the tire can safely hold, not what your vehicle wants. Inflating to the sidewall number gives a harsh ride, a narrow contact patch, and accelerated centre-tread wear.
    2. Check all four tires, plus the spare. Many full-size spares carry a sensor and will trigger the warning from inside the boot. Check them cold — parked at least three hours, or driven less than a mile. Warm tires read high and will fool you into underinflating.
    3. Inflate to the placard pressure. Add in short bursts and re-check. If you overshoot, press the centre pin in the valve to bleed a little out.
    4. Refit the valve caps. They keep moisture and grit out of the valve core, which is a common cause of slow leaks and seized sensors.
    5. Drive to let the system relearn. Most direct systems need ten to twenty minutes above roughly 15 mph to re-read all sensors. Many lights clear on their own at this point with no reset needed.
    6. Run the reset procedure if it does not clear. Common patterns: a TPMS reset button under the dashboard or in the glovebox, held with the ignition on until the light blinks three times; or a menu item under vehicle settings. Indirect systems almost always require this step, because the system has to learn the new baseline. Check your manual for the exact sequence.
    7. Hunt for a slow leak if one tire keeps dropping. Spray soapy water around the tread, the sidewall, the valve stem and the wheel bead. Bubbles show you the leak. A nail in the tread is often repairable; a sidewall puncture is not, and that tire must be replaced.

    Common mistakes

    • Inflating to the sidewall maximum. The most common and most consequential error. Use the door placard number.
    • Checking pressure on hot tires. A tire warmed by twenty miles of driving can read several psi higher than it truly is cold.
    • Ignoring the spare. If the light will not clear and all four road tires are correct, check the spare.
    • Assuming the light means a puncture. Most of the time it is temperature plus normal slow permeation. Tires lose roughly 1 psi a month even when perfectly healthy.
    • Having tires changed without mentioning TPMS. Sensors are easily damaged by careless mounting, and a service kit of new valve seals should be fitted each time the tire comes off.
    • Treating a flashing light as a pressure problem. It is a system fault, and no amount of air will fix it.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I drive with the tire pressure light on?

    Drive gently to the nearest place you can add air, and check the tires visually before you set off. If one is visibly flat or the car pulls or feels unstable, stop and change to the spare or call for assistance. A severely underinflated tire builds heat rapidly at speed and can fail.

    Why did the light come on when all my tires look fine?

    Tires can be 20 percent underinflated with no visible difference, particularly low-profile ones. Trust the gauge, not your eyes.

    How long do TPMS sensors last?

    The sealed battery typically gives five to ten years. When one dies the sensor is replaced as a unit. If your vehicle is around a decade old and sensors start failing one after another, replacing the set during a tire change is usually the sensible move.

    Do I need to reset TPMS after rotating tires?

    On systems that display per-tire pressures, yes, or the display will show positions incorrectly. Systems that only give a single warning light usually relearn on their own. Indirect systems should be recalibrated after any rotation or inflation.

    When to call a professional

    • The light flashes at start-up, indicating a sensor or module fault that needs TPMS-capable diagnostic equipment
    • A tire loses pressure repeatedly despite no visible puncture, which can indicate a bead leak or a corroded wheel rim
    • You need sensors replaced or programmed, since new sensors usually require relearning to the vehicle
    • You find a puncture in the sidewall or shoulder, which cannot be safely repaired
    • The valve stem itself is leaking or corroded, which requires demounting the tire
