Ask five people how often to change your oil and you will get five confident, contradictory answers. One will insist on 3,000 miles. Another runs full synthetic to 10,000 and has done for years without trouble. Both think the other is wrong.
The honest answer is that the interval depends on three things: what oil is in the sump, what the manufacturer specified for your engine, and how you actually drive. Get those three right and you can stop guessing.
Where the 3,000-mile rule came from
It was good advice, in 1975. Conventional oils of that era broke down faster, engines ran with looser tolerances, and filtration was cruder. Three thousand miles was a sensible margin.
Modern engines are built to tighter tolerances, run cleaner, and use oils with far more capable additive packages. Meanwhile, the quick-lube industry had a strong commercial reason to keep the old number alive on a windscreen sticker. For most cars built in the last two decades, 3,000 miles is not dangerous, just unnecessary spending and unnecessary waste oil.
What interval does your car actually need?
These are general ranges for a modern engine in normal service. They are a starting point, not a substitute for your manual:
- Conventional oil — roughly 3,000 to 5,000 miles
- Synthetic blend — roughly 5,000 to 7,500 miles
- Full synthetic — roughly 7,500 to 10,000 miles, and some manufacturer specifications extend further
Alongside mileage there is a time limit. Oil degrades through oxidation and moisture contamination even sitting still, so change it at least once every six to twelve months regardless of miles driven. If you drive 2,000 miles a year, you are on the time schedule, not the mileage one.
The owner’s manual beats every rule of thumb
This is the part people skip, and it is the only part that is genuinely authoritative. Your manual specifies both the interval and the required oil specification for your engine, and modern engines are far pickier than older ones about that specification.
Engines with variable valve timing use oil pressure to actuate the timing mechanism, and the wrong viscosity can cause timing faults and rough running. Turbocharged engines run oil through a bearing that sees extreme heat, and an oil not rated for it will coke and block passages. Direct-injection engines have their own requirements around deposit control.
Put simply: using an oil that does not meet the manufacturer’s specification is a bigger risk than being a thousand miles late on the interval.
Severe service: most drivers qualify
Manuals typically list two schedules, normal and severe. Read the severe list carefully, because a lot of ordinary driving falls into it:
- Frequent trips shorter than about five miles, where the engine never fully reaches operating temperature
- Extensive stop-and-go traffic
- Sustained very hot or very cold weather
- Towing a trailer or carrying heavy loads
- Driving on dusty, sandy or unpaved roads
- Extended idling
Short-trip driving is the one that catches people out. An engine that never gets hot enough to boil off condensation accumulates water and fuel dilution in the oil, which is far harder on it than steady highway miles. A commuter doing four miles each way is working the oil harder than someone doing 40 miles of motorway, despite covering a tenth of the distance. Reading the viscosity numbers
An oil labelled 5W-30 is telling you two things:
- The first number with the W (for winter) describes how the oil flows when cold. Lower is thinner when cold, which means faster circulation on start-up. Most engine wear happens in the first seconds after a cold start, before oil reaches the top of the engine, so this number matters more than people think in cold climates.
- The second number describes viscosity at operating temperature. Higher is thicker when hot.
So 0W-20 flows more readily on a freezing morning than 5W-30 while being thinner at temperature. Use what your manufacturer specifies. Going thicker than specified in a modern engine designed for thin oil can starve variable valve timing actuators and narrow oil passages.
Conventional, blend, or full synthetic?
- Conventional is refined crude with an additive package. It works, it is the cheapest option, and it needs changing most often. Reasonable for older, low-stress engines driven gently.
- Synthetic blend mixes conventional and synthetic base stocks. A middle option in both cost and interval.
- Full synthetic uses engineered base stocks with uniform molecules. It resists thermal breakdown better, flows better when cold, and holds its interval longer. For turbocharged engines, direct injection, extreme climates, or any engine where the manufacturer specifies it, this is not an upgrade — it is the requirement.
Prices vary considerably by brand and region, but the longer interval on full synthetic narrows the real cost gap more than the shelf price suggests.
Oil life monitors: trust them, with one caveat
Most cars built in the last fifteen years have an oil life monitoring system. The better ones are not simple mileage counters. They model oil degradation using engine temperature, load, revolutions, trip length and cold starts, and they are generally more accurate than a fixed interval.
The caveat is that a monitor reading zero percent means the oil has used its useful life, not that it will fail tomorrow. And a monitor cannot know if you put the wrong oil in, or if a coolant leak is contaminating the sump. It is a good tool, not an infallible one. Still check the dipstick monthly.
How to check your oil properly
- Park on level ground. A slope will give you a false reading.
- Let the engine sit. If it has been running, wait five to ten minutes for oil to drain back to the sump.
- Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean with a rag, and reinsert it fully.
- Pull it again and read the level. It should sit between the two marks, ideally nearer the upper one.
- Look at the oil itself. Fresh oil is amber and translucent. Dark is normal and expected, especially in a diesel. What is not normal is a milky, coffee-coloured film, which suggests coolant in the oil, or a gritty texture, or a level that is rising rather than falling, which can mean fuel dilution.
Common mistakes
- Overfilling. Too much oil lets the crankshaft whip it into foam, and foam does not lubricate. Add in small amounts and re-check.
- Reusing the drain plug washer. Crush washers are designed to deform once. Reusing one is the most common cause of a weeping drain plug.
- Overtightening the filter. Hand-tight plus the amount specified on the filter is enough. Overtightening destroys the gasket and makes the next removal miserable.
- Forgetting to pre-fill and lubricate the new filter gasket. A dry gasket can roll and leak.

- Mixing viscosities to “top up”. In an emergency, adding the wrong grade beats running low. As a habit, it defeats the point of the specification.
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch from conventional to synthetic?
Yes. The old warning that synthetic causes leaks in high-mileage engines came from early formulations and is largely obsolete. If an engine has a marginal seal, synthetic’s better cleaning action may reveal a leak that was already there, but it does not create one.
Does oil go bad if I barely drive?
Yes, which is why the time-based limit exists. Moisture and combustion by-products accumulate and acids form, none of which care about the odometer.
What happens if I go over the interval?
A few hundred miles late is not a catastrophe. Consistently doubling the interval leads to sludge, blocked oil passages, and accelerated wear on timing components — a very expensive way to save a small amount.
Is dark oil bad oil?
No. Darkening means the detergents are doing their job, holding contaminants in suspension so they leave with the drain. Judge by interval and level, not colour.
When to call a professional
Get a shop involved if:
- The oil looks milky or like coffee with cream, which suggests coolant intrusion and possibly a head gasket
- The oil level drops noticeably between changes with no visible leak, which means it is being burnt or going somewhere it should not
- The oil pressure warning light comes on — stop the engine immediately, do not drive to the shop, and have it recovered
- The drain plug threads are stripped or the plug will not seat, which may need a thread repair or an oil pan replacement
- You hear ticking or knocking from the top of the engine after a change, which can indicate an oil supply problem
