The repair is sometimes free, yet this is also a code people waste money on by replacing parts in the wrong order. What a P0455 Code Actually Means
P0455 is defined as Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Gross Leak). The evaporative emission (EVAP) system captures fuel vapor from the tank in a charcoal canister and feeds it into the engine to be burned instead of letting it escape into the air. The whole thing is sealed, and the engine control module periodically tests that seal.
“Gross leak” is the largest of the leak tiers. Most systems flag P0455 at roughly a 0.040-inch equivalent opening or bigger, though the exact threshold and test method vary by manufacturer and model year. In plain terms: the computer could not build or hold any meaningful vacuum or pressure at all, so the opening is large enough that you have a realistic chance of finding it by hand.

Step 1: Read the Code and Check for Company

Step 2: Inspect the Gas Cap Properly
Remove the cap and look at the rubber O-ring. A good seal is soft and slightly springy. If it is cracked, flattened, glazed hard or has grit embedded in it, replace the cap. Wipe the sealing surface clean, refit the cap and turn it until it clicks at least three times. - Using shop air to pressurize the system. This damages seals and the canister. The EVAP system operates at very low pressure only.
- Topping off the tank after the pump clicks. Forcing extra fuel in pushes liquid into the charcoal canister, which is designed for vapor, and can crack it.
