How to Replace Ignition Coils & Spark Plugs (Civic, Accord, Camry, RAV4, F-150)

    Does your car shake when it is running? Does it feel like it is bumping or stumbling? Did your check engine light come on? A big reason for this is worn-out spark plugs and ignition coils. The good news: this is one of the easiest fix-it jobs on a car. If you can use a wrench and follow steps in order, you can do this.

    What Do These Two Parts Even Do?

    Your engine burns gas to make power. But gas does not burn by itself — it needs a tiny spark, like a mini lightning bolt. Here is the team that makes that spark:

    • Spark plug — the small part that makes the spark inside the engine.
    • Ignition coil — the part that gives the spark plug the strong zap of electricity it needs.

    When one wears out, the spark gets weak or stops. That “miss” is called a misfire. Because both parts are the same age and wear out together, most people change them as a set.

    Signs You Need New Plugs or Coils

    • The engine shakes or rumbles, most of all when it is cold.
    • The car jerks or hesitates when you press the gas.
    • You are buying more gas than usual.
    • The car is hard to start in the morning.
    • The check engine light is on — often with a code like P0300 or P0301 through P0306.

    Important: If your check engine light is blinking while you drive, stop driving soon. A blinking light means raw gas is going into a costly part called the catalytic converter, and that can wreck it.

    Reading the code: A code like P0303 tells you the exact spot — the “3” means cylinder number 3. A plain P0300 means the engine is missing in more than one spot, so more than one plug may be worn.

    • A ratchet (a wrench that clicks) with a 10mm socket
    • A spark plug socket (usually 5/8 inch, sometimes 9/16 inch) — it has a rubber grip inside to hold the plug
    • A few socket extensions (short metal bars that help you reach down)
    • A torque wrench — this tells you when a bolt is tight enough. Do not skip this one.
    • New spark plugs and coils that match your car
    • A can of compressed air or a shop vacuum
    • A little dielectric grease (a special rubber-safe grease)

    Buy the right plug. Your car was built for a special long-life plug (called iridium or platinum). Do not swap in a cheap copper plug — your engine’s computer expects the good kind.

    Step-by-Step: Changing Plugs and Coils

    Do one cylinder at a time, all the way through, before you move to the next. That way you can never mix up the parts.

    1. Let the engine cool down all the way. Wait at least 2 hours. Pulling a plug from a hot engine can strip the threads and cause a big repair. This is a safety and money step — do not rush it.
    2. Take the negative (−) cable off the battery. Loosen the 10mm bolt on the black/negative post and set the cable aside. This keeps you safe and clears the error codes.
    3. Remove the engine cover. On a Civic or Accord it usually pops right off. On a Camry or RAV4 it may have a few 10mm nuts. On an F-150 you may need to move a hose out of the way.
    4. Unplug the coil. Press the little tab and gently pull the connector off. Do not yank it — old plastic clips crack easily.
    5. Take out the coil. Remove the 10mm bolt, then pull the coil straight up with a small twist. If it feels stuck, twist — never yank hard.
    6. Blow out the hole. Use compressed air to clean around the plug before you remove it. If dirt falls into the engine, it can scratch the inside. Do not skip this.
    7. Loosen and remove the old spark plug. Use a straight extension so you pull it out nice and even.
    8. Look at the old plug. Light tan color = healthy. Black and sooty = too much gas. White = running too hot. Oily = a different problem to check later.
    9. Check the new plug. Most new plugs are ready right out of the box. Just look it over. Never tap or bend the tip — the thin wire can snap.
    10. Start the new plug by hand. Turn it in with your fingers first. If it does not turn easily, stop and back it out. Forcing it can ruin the threads.
    11. Tighten to the right number with your torque wrench (see the table). Too tight is the #1 mistake — the wrench stops you from over-doing it.
    12. Add a little grease to the coil boot (the rubber tip), push the coil back in, tighten the bolt, and click the connector back on.
    13. Move to the next cylinder and repeat until they are all done.
    14. Reconnect the battery, start the car, and let it idle for 5 minutes. Then go for a short drive. The shaking should be gone.

    Change All of Them, or Just One?

    If one coil dies at a high mileage (like 90,000 miles), the others are old too. If the covers are already off, changing the whole set is smart and saves you doing this again soon. But if a coil fails early (under 50,000 miles), it was probably just a bad part — change only that one.

    Still Shaking After the Swap?

    If the same misfire code comes back with brand-new parts, the spark is not the problem. Ask a shop to check these:

    • Fuel injector — the part that sprays gas into that cylinder.
    • Vacuum leak — a cracked hose letting in extra air.
    • Low compression — a worn engine part. A simple compression test shows this.
    • Carbon buildup — gunk inside some engines that spark parts cannot fix.

    How Much Does It Cost?

    Four spark plugs cost about $40–$70. Four coils cost about $90–$200. A shop would charge $250–$500 to do it — and most of that is labor you just did yourself in one afternoon. (A V8 F-150 has 8 of everything, so add more time and parts.)
