A warning light popped up on your Toyota dash. Scary, right? Here is the good news: Toyota uses a simple color code, and once you know it, you already understand most of what your car is telling you. Learn this first:

Easy rule: Red means stop. Yellow means check it soon. Green and blue mean everything is fine.
Red Lights — Stop Driving
Oil Pressure Light (looks like an oil can)
This is the most serious light on your dash. It does not just mean low oil — it means the oil is not moving through the engine with enough pressure. Without that pressure, an engine can be ruined in under a minute.
What to do: Pull over right away and turn the engine off. Check the oil dipstick. If oil is low, add some and restart. If the level is fine but the light stays on, do not drive — get a tow.
Charging / Battery Light (looks like a battery)
The part that charges your battery (the alternator) has stopped. The car is now running only on the battery, which gives you about 20 to 40 minutes before it dies.
What to do: Turn off the AC, radio, and heated seats to save power. Drive straight to a shop or home. Do not shut the engine off until you get there — it may not restart.
Temperature Light (a thermometer in wavy lines)
The engine is too hot. Overheating can warp metal parts and cause repairs that cost thousands.
What to do: Pull over, shut it off, and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. Never open the radiator cap while hot — hot steam can burn you badly. Once cool, check the coolant level.
Brake Light (the word BRAKE, or a “!” in a circle)
Three things can cause this: the parking brake is still on, the brake fluid is low, or there is a brake failure.
What to do: First, make sure the parking brake is fully released. If it is, check the brake fluid. If the pedal also feels soft or sinks, do not drive — get a tow.
Airbag (SRS) Light
Your airbag system has a fault. The car drives fine, but the airbags might not go off in a crash. This needs a special scan tool — a basic code reader cannot see airbag faults.
Yellow Lights — Check It Soon
Check Engine Light
The most misunderstood light of all. It can mean something tiny (a loose gas cap) or something big.
- Steady yellow: A problem is stored, but it is not an emergency. Get the code read.
- Blinking: The engine is misfiring and dumping raw gas into a costly part (the catalytic converter). Pull over and stop. Driving will destroy it.
On the Camry and RAV4, the usual causes are gas-cap/EVAP leaks (codes P0455, P0442), oxygen sensor codes, and misfires. A cheap OBD2 scanner tells you which one before you spend a dollar.
VSC / TRAC OFF / Slip Light
This is the light Toyota owners get confused by most. It is the Vehicle Stability Control — the system that keeps you from sliding.
Here is the key trick: On many Toyotas, a check engine light will automatically turn on the VSC light too. So if you see the check engine light AND the VSC light together, you very likely have one problem, not three. Fix the engine code and the VSC light usually goes away with it.
If the slip light only flashes while you drive, that is different — it means the system is working right now because a wheel slipped. That is normal and good.
ABS Light
Your anti-lock brakes are switched off. Your normal brakes still work fine — you just lose the anti-lock help in a hard, panic stop. The usual cause is a dirty wheel speed sensor. Drive carefully and get it checked.
Tire Pressure Light (TPMS — a “!” inside a horseshoe shape)
At least one tire is low. Check all four with a gauge and fill them to the number on the sticker inside the driver’s door.
Cold mornings: Tire pressure drops as the air gets colder. A light that shows up on the first cold morning is often just the weather, not a leak. Add a little air and it usually clears.
Maintenance Required (MAINT REQD)
This is not a problem. It is just a mileage reminder for your oil change, set on a timer. Change the oil, then reset it (usually by holding the trip reset button while turning the key on — check your manual).
Hybrid Lights (Camry Hybrid / RAV4 Hybrid)
Red Triangle with a “!” (the “Master Warning”)
The scariest-looking light for hybrid owners — but it is just a “read the screen” alert. The real message shows up on the display in the middle of the dash. It could be something small (a door not shut) or something big.
What to do: Read the message on the screen. If it says to stop the car, stop the car.
Hybrid System Light (a car with a “!”)
A fault in the hybrid parts (the battery or its control system). The car may slow itself down to protect itself. This one needs a dealer or a hybrid-trained shop. High-voltage hybrid parts are not a home job.
Green “READY” Light
Not a warning at all! It means the hybrid is on and the car will move when you press the gas — even when the gas engine is silent. If READY is not lit, the car will not move.
Green and Blue — Nothing Is Wrong
- Green ECO: You are driving in a gas-saving way
- Green cruise control: Cruise is on
- Blue high beam: Your bright lights are on
- Green arrows: Your turn signal is on (super-fast blinking = a bulb is burnt out)
The One Tool Worth Owning
A basic OBD2 scanner costs less than one hour of shop time. When the check engine light comes on, plugging it in takes about a minute and tells you if you are looking at a $20 gas cap or a $900 part. Every Camry and RAV4 owner should keep one in the glovebox.
